WASHINGTON, DC, September 16, 2026 -- The team with Kitchel Injury Law congratulates Zarah Vidriezca Mota and Lillian Welty on winning the 2026 Defending Voices Without a Voice Scholarship! Mota is an incoming 1L at American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C., while Welty is a junior at Northern Arizona University.
The Defending Voices Without a Voice Scholarship promises $2,500 to an undergraduate and $5,000 to a graduate student intent on pursuing careers as immigration lawyers after their graduation.
While Kitchel Injury Law does not practice immigration law, the firm recognizes the increased need for legal professionals who will fight back against the discrimination and injustice that plague the United States' immigrant communities.
Welty is currently a history major with a minor in criminology and criminal studies. When she's not studying for class, she participates in her college's mock trial team and serves as the Service Chair for Northern Arizona University's Blue Key Honor Society. She's also spent time working as an intern under criminal defense attorneys in Washington, D.C.
Mota spent her undergraduate career at the University of La Verne studying Legal Studies and securing her Paralegal Certificate. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. She also interned with the Madison Group in Washington, D.C. before working full-time as an Office Administrator with the Step Forward Foundation.
Mota and Welty impressed the team with their drive and compassion. Welty found her interest in immigration law after reading Bryan Stevenson's Just Mercy, while Mota felt driven to give back to her immigrant community. Both scholarship recipients intend to leverage their academic experience in an effort to help people most impacted by immigration law defend themselves against wrongful deportations and mistreatment.
